What you can expect…
A typical day begins with a lively and interactive presentation by Alison, in role as a character from the past, illustrated with artefacts and enhanced with chatty anecdotes.
The day continues with the children participating in a wide range of activities appropriate to the period ~ usually with plenty of opportunity for handling and drawing artefacts (many original and museum-quality).
The day concludes with a coming-together activity, often involving eating food that we have prepared earlier and sometimes including singing, dancing, or role-play.
Throughout the day, the children are encouraged to participate fully, as they are drawn into the period. There are opportunities for them to display the knowledge they already have as well as extend their understanding through the experiences they receive, and questions are welcomed.
Although the workshops are history-centred, there are often elements of other subjects naturally woven in to the content of the days to further enrich the experiences for the children.
The intention of the workshops is to engage all of the children in worthwhile, memorable experiences. With the emphasis on learning through participation and the use of quality resources, it is hoped that every child will develop his/her knowledge and understanding of how people lived in the past.
