‘Below stairs’ - Victorian Servants

Victorian artefactsThis day complements studies of the lives of Victorian servants, providing a hands-on experience of the jobs that needed to be done in a large house on a daily basis. Victorian housekeeper Mrs. Browne tells of her long day and demonstrates some of the servants’ duties, using a variety of original implements before engaging the children in the jobs to be done for the day.

The children try to impress her with their skills at beating the carpet, scrubbing and sweeping, dusting and cleaning, sewing, polishing, and washing up. Some simple role-play in response to tasks set by Mrs. Browne completes the day, after which the children are invited to apply for positions in the household…

This day supports Unit 11 of QCA History Schemes of Work - Key stage 2
